On march for Martyrs
• THE Tolpuddle and Islington Festival, from April 18 to 25, commemorates the 175th anniversary of the six Tolpuddle Martyrs, Dorset agricultural workers who were transported to Australia, their only “crime” being joining a trade union.
At the time a 200,000-strong petition was signed and 100,000 supporters marched from Copenhagen Fields, which would today be on both sides of Caledonian Road.
There is a mural on the site of the Mitre pub in Copenhagen Street which depicts the Tolpuddle Martyrs.
Activities organised for the week include a Radical Islington walk (April 18), a comedy night with John Hegley and Steve Parry (April 20), a showing of Comrades, a film about the Martyrs, on April 21 at Screen on the Green and Tolpuddle KX Festival on April 25, with a march at 12.30pm.
We are asking people to meet at Caledonian Park for the march. The Music Festival begins at 2pm with Billy Bragg, Northern Celts and many others.

As we all know, we are in the middle of a recession and the Tribune has been reporting threatened job losses all over Islington. There would not be a better time to celebrate an episode when people stuck together and won rights which we all enjoy.
