Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 April 2009

It’s time to repair clock

• COUNCILLOR Jyoti Vaja has had a windfall £1,000 from an Islington Council south area committee meeting she did not have to chair.
She was paid £1,000 a meeting last year, at a £6,000-a-year-rate special allowance, to chair the committee but did not have to chair the January 20 meeting as there was not enough business (‘Disgust’ over £1,000 meetings, April 3).
“There is no funding,” she told me at the March 24 meeting when I asked  the committee to repair the large, handsome, projecting Victorian clock at the gateway to Islington, in Rosebery Avenue.
As she hasn’t earned the also rather handsome £1,000, and pocketed a munificent £1,000 a two-hour meeting for the others she chaired, she might like to donate the £1,000 to repairing this quite beautiful public clock, sadly in suspended animation.
