Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 10 April 2009

Following the leader?

• I HEAR with interest that the leader of Islington Council, James Kempton, is finally throwing in the towel and leaving this sinking Lib Dem administration before he has to face the electorate next May.
The people of St Mary’s ward will be able to pass their own verdict on this act of political cowardice but the whole of the Lib Dem group must now be sitting uneasily on their bloated expenses and nervously awaiting the decision of the voters in May 2010.
Meanwhile, it is left to Islington Labour to try to patch up this mess and offer people some hope during this time of economic anxiety. While the Lib Dems indulge in a vanishing act, it is Islington Labour that has delivered a progressive budget that targets help for working families and pensioners.
Now the Liberals want to impose Councillor Terry Stacy on us as a replacement for Cllr Kempton; the man who opposed free school meals and pensioners’ council tax rebates and who has failed to deliver affordable housing. No thanks! I hope we don’t have to wait too long before the rest of this Lib Dem administration goes the same way as Cllr Kempton.
GARY POOLE
Secretary, Islington South and Finsbury Constituency Labour Party
