Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 17 April 2009

Fairer deal for families

• I WAS more than excited to read that Islington Council is adjusting the way it allocates housing to reflect the needs of overcrowded families, with an emphasis on those affected by, often hidden, disabilities and poor welfare.
I hope this will make a system that many have found frustrating and at times blinkered more equitable for some of Islington’s most vulnerable.
Recent research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has shown that families with disabled children are much more likely to live in overcrowded and poor quality housing, compounding the significant difficulties that then affect all family members and lead to well-above-average incidence of family breakdown, vulnerability and children in care.
I suspect that Islington doesn’t yet buck this trend, but I really hope that it starts to with efforts like this.
