Rebecca Goossen, killed in accident with lorry
Latest accident victim ‘will always be remembered’, say colleagues

REBECCA Goossen, a trainee architect with everything to live for, was named this week as the latest cyclist to die on the streets of Islington.

Rebecca, 29, was on her way to work when the accident happened in Old Street, at the junction with Goswell Road, Finsbury, at 9.20am last Thursday.
A 32-tonne lorry was attempting to turn left into Goswell Road when the cyclist was caught on the inside.
Paramedics and firemen tried to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel an hour later.
Colleagues at her workplace, The Metropolitan Workshop, in Cowcross Street, said they would campaign to make cycling safer in London.
A spokesman for the company said: “Rebecca was a highly valued member of the practice. She joined us in 2007 and made generous contributions to our team, our work and our lives. She will always be remembered.
“Many of us are cyclists and we support the London Cycling Campaign. This tragedy prompts us to become more involved with it and Transport for London’s cycling campaign.”
German-born Ms Goossen, who lived in Bethnal Green, is the fourth cyclist to die on London’s roads this year.
The day before her death, Meryem Ozekman, 37, was killed when she was hit by a lorry in Elephant and Castle, south London.
Rebecca’s devastated flatmate, Cristina Schoenborn, has started a memorial group on social networking website Facebook. She wrote: “We are all choked and devastated and it is very hard to realise that she is gone.
“We will all carry you in our hearts wherever we go. We will remember your smile and the moments that we were able to commemorate with you. And, therefore, we are thankful and happy – that we could be part of your life.”
An inquest into Ms Goossen’s death was opened at St Pancras Coroner’s Court yesterday (Thursday). It will resume on October 22. A 34-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has been released on police bail.
The death is the latest in Islington to involve a cement-mixer lorry.
Community activist Lisa Pontecorvo, 64, was crushed to death as she wheeled her cycle in front of a cement mixer in Holloway Road in September last year.
And in December 2006, cyclist Emma Foa, 56, died after colliding with a left-turning cement-mixer lorry in Camley Street, King’s Cross.
