Box clever: New gardeners grow for it!
NOVICE gardeners have been learning how to grow salad in a window box at the borough’s first organic workshop. More than 40 residents, many of whom had no previous gardening experience, were given expert tips at Islington Council’s Green Living Centre and the Ecology Centre.
Participants were given a container, compost and seeds and taken step by step through the process from sowing seeds to harvesting the crop.
Resident Denis Carty said: “The day was informative. I liked the idea of joining the meetings and social gardening groups.”
Environment chief Councillor Greg Foxsmith said: “If you have a windowsill, you can get cracking straight away with some great-tasting window box crops. Growing local food is what we’re aiming for. And, let’s face it, you can’t get more local than your own home.”
The next workshops are on Saturday, May 23, and Saturday, June 6.
There will also be a six-week beginners course on growing your own food during April and May. For further details and bookings contact 020 7527 4462 or email greenliving@islington.gov.uk |
