Friends rally to Frances
LORD Smith of Finsbury offered his sympathies this week to Labour Party stalwart Frances Morrell whose husband died following a fall at his home in Barnsbury.
An inquest has been opened into the death of former teacher Brian Morrell, 73, who died of multiple injuries after falling into the court-yard from a rear window at their home in Hemmingford Road. He was said to have been suffering from depression.
Lord Smith, who has worked with Mrs Morrell in the past said his heart went out to her.
News of Mr Morrell’s death, reported in the Islington Tribune last week, prompted messages of sympathy from Tony Benn and Ken Livingstone.
Rev Michael Learmouth, team rector, at St Andrew’s, Thornhill Square, where Mr Morrell was a member of the church council, said he was “valued as a friend and a fellow Christian.”
He added: “Brian was always willing to help. The church is open to the public every Saturday morning between 10 and 12 and Brian acted as steward looking after the building and welcoming people into our church.
“Brian also opened up the church and rang the bell for both our Sunday services and for weddings and funerals.”
Mr Morrell was well known in the community and was often seen walking about or sitting in the Church Gardens or Thornhill Square Park.
His funeral was on Maundy Thursday at St Andrew’s.
The inquest was adjourned until June 11. |
