Gay pub to host Thursday strip shows

THE landlady of England’s oldest gay pub has won the right to host fortnightly male strip shows following requests from customers.
The Town Hall’s licensing panel agreed on Wednesday to allow Kay Stokes, who owns the King Edward VI pub in Bromfield Street, Angel, to stage the 45-minute strip shows every other Thursday, to alternate with an already established cabaret/drag night.
Ms Stokes said the strippers were “just a bit of fun”.
Residents objected to the application on the grounds that the shows would cause additional noise disturbance and that striptease would be inappropriate in a residential street. But Ms Stokes told the meeting: “We already have an entertainment licence for cabaret, and we are only planning for the strip shows to take place between 10.15pm and 11pm every other Thursday.
“You can’t see anything from the street or from neighbouring flats as we have blinds covering windows. The blinds are always closed in the evenings.”
Ms Stokes said after the hearing: “It is the oldest gay pub in England and possibly in Europe. These days you have to give something back to customers.”
