Policing
• THE death of Ian Tomlinson at the G20 protests was a tragedy that has shocked many people. Lib Dem MPs who observe both sides of the protest are demanding a full-scale criminal investigation into Mr Tomlinson’s death.
Communities should have good relationships with the police. In Islington, police Safer Neighbourhoods teams meet regularly with the public. This can produce great results. In St Mary’s ward, after reports from concerned residents, a drug dealer was charged with possession with intent to supply a class A drug.
But too often residents tell me they contacted the police – to tackle anti-social behaviour, car crime or worse – only to find the resources are just not there to respond. We need more accountable community policing.

• ONE is wary of speaking to police officers as they seem to think it’s on a par with obstructing them in the course of their duties.
They quite forget when they’re at demos it’s their duty to keep order, not stifle free speech.
Give them more power and they’ll use it. Officers all too easily take offence when none is intended. No wonder they want a ban on photographing them, what with virtually every pocket packing a digital mobile.
That’s just plain unreasonable.
