Keep left, pedestrians
• IN support of Murray Abisch in his complaint about selfish pedestrians versus cyclists, may I suggest that, although we drive on the left in this country, people seem no longer to be taught to walk on the left (Cycle lanes, May 1). Thus, on a narrow pavement or next to a cycle lane, they have their backs to the traffic.
Cycling along Oxford Street, I seriously bashed a pedestrian on his arm because he stepped off the pavement into my path with his back to me (of course, I might have been a car).
Now that London’s pavements are so crowded, this becomes a real problem, even a danger.
On a related point, I am annoyed that, despite more passengers, more of whom are visitors to London, and more wheeling suitcases and buggies, Transport for London is putting up fewer and smaller “keep left” signs in Underground stations.
A lot of congestion could be avoided if there were clear rules about this and good signage.
