Skull find halts work on cross-capital rail link

A GRIM discovery has halted work on the new Crossrail line in Farringdon.
A small area in Charterhouse Street has been sealed off after workers uncovered a skull and coffin nail, believed to be more than 200 years old, while doing preparatory work for the new cross-London line.
The coroner has been informed and the Museum of London brought in to examine the finds. It is believed the skull may have come from an old burial ground belonging to St Sepulchre’s Church, which was redeveloped in the 19th century.
A spokesman for Crossrail said: “We found fragments of bone. There was no screaming moment. The boys see these things quite regularly in Farringdon because of the nature of the area.”
He added: “The coroner has told us he’s not interested because they are so old. We’re talking with the museum and the Ministry of Justice as we need to have a licence to take the bones out.
“After that, they will be checked over by the museum.”
A spokeswoman for Islington police said: “The find is not being treated as suspicious.”
