Islington Tribune - by ROISIN GADELRAB

Wait for teachers’ records checks

TWO schools have failed to prove they have made reference and criminal records checks on all staff after education chiefs gave every school in Islington five days to come up with evidence.
CE@Islington, which runs schools, last night confirmed 59 of 61 schools had complied with the demand made by director of children’s services Eleanor Schooling three weeks ago. Ms Schooling wrote demanding to see all schools’ single central record of recruitment “as evidence to support safer recruitment”.
A spokeswoman for CE@Islington said it was in contact with the two schools that had not yet complied. The move comes after the Tribune revealed how 12 governors at Canonbury Primary School walked out last term over concerns that they were being scapegoated for failings in recruitment systems.
It also emerged this week that Canonbury’s former headteacher has lodged an appeal against his dismissal for gross misconduct. Jay Henderson was officially dismissed two weeks ago by a disciplinary panel of three governors. His appeal will be heard by a panel of three different governors.
