Why must we tidy up?
• I HAVE spoken to Islington Council many times about the cleaning of St John’s Square in Clerkenwell, and have got nowhere. Something is wrong when residents have a group sweeping the square in the morning while the street sweeper sits drinking tea and watching us. I am aware that he is entitled to breaks, by the way.
A small sweeper vehicle drives up and down the area but will not come into the square, which contains a grade I-listed building.
As we cannot find anyone whose job it is to sweep the north side of the square we are forced to clear it up ourselves.
A broken bottle which we chose to ignore remained on the skateboarders’ wall for three weeks before a passer-by moved it.
Where should I send our invoice for the work that the residents are doing?
