Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 29 May 2009

Bring back Rise festival

• LAST Thursday I handed a petition to London Mayor Boris Johnson with signatures from more than 2,000 Londoners asking him to bring back the Rise festival with its anti-racism message intact. Residents were shocked and devastated at the Mayor’s decision to cancel the festival. The petition they put together shows the strength of their feeling, and I was so proud to hand it over.
Anti-racism has never been so important in London. Right now, there is a strong threat from the BNP. It is trying to play on people’s fears during this recession and create hatred in our communities. We must stand united against its hate-mongering and show that it cannot divide London.
Rise festival embodied this message of unity and this is why Londoners are demanding to have it back. I worry that Mr Johnson is not showing leadership on this issue and call on him to listen to what Londoners are telling him and reverse his terrible decision.
JENNETTE ARNOLD
London Assembly member for North East London

A perfect and seldom opportunity for summer fun that carries a strong ethical and moral message has been taken away from us. Why?
