‘FIND MY SON’ PLEA AFTER DROWNING
Mother urges Danish authorities to continue search for body
AN Islington mother this week pleaded with the Danish authorities to continue searching for the body of her son, who drowned during a day trip.
Tragedy struck Bradley Carty, 19, from Rawstorne Road, Angel, on a trip with two friends to the Danish coastal resort of Aarhus on Tuesday.
He had climbed into a rowing boat left moored on the shore and immediately got into difficulties before falling into the sea and drowning.
Bradley’s family contacted Islington South and Finsbury Labour MP Emily Thornberry after hearing that the search had been called off indefinitely on Wednesday due to bad weather.
Ms Thornberry contacted the Foreign Office and the Danish Ambassador to ensure that everything was being done to find Bradley’s body.
His two friends, Ashley and Lyle, who remained on the beach at the time of the accident, could only watch as the rowing boat, with Bradley, floated out to sea on a rough current.
It is thought that in panic Bradley, who was not a strong swimmer, stood up while attempting to turn the boat around and fell into the sea. One of his friends attempted a rescue with another person on the beach but both were beaten back by the strong waves.
Police and coastguard divers arrived within minutes but called off the search after several hours as it became dark.
It was resumed on Wednesday morning but called off later that day due to dangerous seas and poor visibility, said to have endangered the lives of the lifeboat team.
Bradley’s mother, Sharon, who works at Sainsbury’s at Angel, said yesterday (Thursday) she could not grieve effectively without her son’s body. She has two other children, Melissa, 22, and Nathan, 15.
If there is no news today (Friday) Ms Small said she may travel to Denmark to observe the search.
Ms Small and Bradley’s father, David, were being comforted by friends and relatives yesterday.
She said the only experience Bradley had with boats was at a half-day course at Islington Boat Club last summer. She added: “I understand that they have called off the search due to bad weather. But we want his body back so we can have a proper funeral and celebrate Bradley’s life with his family and friends.”
Bradley, a former pupil at Highbury Grove School, had embarked on an English and maths course at a community college in Camden. Sharon described him as a “good, caring and loving son who was a credit to his family”.
Ms Thornberry said she was in touch with the Danish Ambassador, who had assured her everything was being done to find Bradley’s body.
“I’ve asked the ambassador to contact me if there is any news,” she said. “I understand the emergency services are finding the currents extremely difficult.
“I accept this is an impossible situation for the family. They don’t know what to do. The idea of waiting for the body to turn up is really awful.
“But we are in the hands of the emergency services, who are I understand looking for the body at such times when it is safe.” |
