Clean sweep Caretaker takes title
TENANTS living in Canonbury say their estate has never been cleaner – and it’s all thanks to Manuel Gaspar.
The 42-year-old Angolan has been named Caretaker of the Year in the annual awards from Homes for Islington (HfI).
He said: “I am popular on the estate because I talk to everybody and help everyone I can. There are a lot of pensioners and I fight for them. People say they are happy and I think I have helped to cheer them up.”
He said he was returning to Angola to visit his mother and would be proud to show her his certificate.
He added: “Angola is much quieter now but it used to be really mad. There was a lot of violence. I prefer living in Islington.”
Mr Gaspar has worked for two years at Kerridge Court in Balls Pond Road, where he lives in a two-bedroom flat.
An entire block of the estate nominated Manuel for the award.
One resident said: “The blocks are very clean and smell good. The rubbish chute and bin is never open or overflowing. “Manuel is always on the estate when we need him. Our estate is the best.”
Eddie Niles, HfI board director, said: “Winners have to impress the people on their estate with the quality of their work so it is a great achievement to win.” |
