Streets get clean sweep
• I WOULD like to thank Paul Raeside for highlighting the issues he has experienced recently in St John’s Square, Clerkenwell (Why must we tidy up? May 29).
The council has recently renegotiated aspects of the waste and street cleaning contract with Enterprise.
This has led to improved cleansing and more than 40 extra frontline staff tackling litter during the evenings and weekends.
We have a team of street environment officers monitoring the work of Enterprise and generally the work is of a good standard. Residential streets are now cleaned three times each week, with busy areas being cleaned more often.
St John’s Square is scheduled to be swept seven days a week and our records show this has been taking place.
Of course, it isn’t acceptable for residents to feel it is necessary to sweep their streets, and I have agreed to meet Mr Raeside and Enterprise to get to the bottom of the problem.
Cleanliness in the borough is routinely surveyed by ENCAMS (the former Tidy Britain group), and the surveys show a year-on-year improvement.
We will do all we can to improve cleanliness standards and I would urge people to call Contact Islington on 0207 527 2000 to report any problems concerning street cleaning.
Kenny Wilks
Head of street environment services, Islington Council
