Literary GCSE pupils have all the write ideas
THE creative talent of nine young writers, aided by some innovative teaching ideas, has led to the launch of an impressive anthology.
The Friday Write Project is a collection of poetry and prose from Year 11 pupils at Islington Arts and Media School.
The pupils, who are all currently taking their GCSE exams, stayed back after school on Friday evenings over the school year to produce their work.
Fifteen-year-old Kwami Odoom’s The Big What-Ifs of the Twenty-First Century is the result of being asked to write down his thought processes.
He wrote about American politics, 9/11, Africa, the existence of God, the education system and slavery.
Another piece called The Lion and the Duck by Esther Babajide was about how people perceived her and how the 15-year-old perceived herself.
Teacher Natasha Porter said: “We would be the only people left in the school two hours after the building had shut. Sometimes it would be getting dark. But it is a really good read and I would buy this for myself. “I would like to say how proud I am to have worked with the students for this book.”
Author Helen Simpson advised teachers on the scheme.
The nine pupils whose work is included in the anthology are Aisha McKenzie, Emily Gardiner Gibson, Esther Babajide, Igor Mongulu, Kwami Odoom, Ozlem Yigit, Seun Ajibade, Shema Said, and Siobhan Callan Kolthoff.
