Designers and makers get a chance to shine as week-long celebration of craft gets underway
GOLDSMITHS’ Hall in the City was shining from all directions on Tuesday as the second British Silver Week got under way. Supported by the Goldsmiths’ Company, the week-long celebration of silversmithing brought together more than 150 of the very finest craftsmen and women in the country.
Leading names in the industry sponsored apprenticeships and work placements, which were awarded to 21 young talented designer-makers, who had turned out to show their work.
More than 105 designer-makers, including the acclaimed Malcolm Appleby, Clive Burr, Wally Gilbert, Brett Payne, Don Porritt and the enameller Fred Rich, exhibited for a second year.
British Silver Week director Gordon Hamme said: “This is very much the renaissance of British silversmiths. There have never been more fine silversmiths than at the moment in the UK and British Silver Week hopes to promote that and tell people about the wonderful skills and crafts in the silver industry.”
Mr Appleby, Britain’s foremost gun engraver, was also given a surprise award, presented by Lord Cunliffe, for the most innovative British Silver Week piece.
Mr Appleby, who also sponsored a number of work placements awarded to new talent, was rewarded with a kilo of silver from Argex Silver. |
