‘Consult us’ say health campaigners
CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Finsbury Health Centre are meeting with council chiefs tonight (Friday) seeking confirmation that they will be included in a new round of talks over the future of the Grade I-listed building by celebrated architect Berthold Lubetkin.
Islington Primary Care Trust, now NHS Islington, decided to abandon the centre and sell the building to a private developer – but councillors intervened and referred the decision to the Department of Health.
Health minister Alan Johnson, who has since been promoted in Gordon Brown’s cabinet reshuffle, has advised NHS Islington to investigate alternatives to selling-up – but campaigners fear they will be left out of the loop.
Barb Jacobson, who has led the campaign against the closure, said: “We are quite worried that we won’t be consulted properly.
“Alan Johnson’s letter does not mention local stakeholders. We are going to speak to the council and make sure they know we want to be involved.”
Businesses near the centre in Pine Street have offered up dozens of free prizes for a fund-raising auction and raffle on Thursday from 7pm. Romantic dinners for two in top restaurants in Exmouth Market are up for grabs, and sessions of free architectural and IT consultancy.
The “Nothing is too good for ordinary people” party, which has been organised to help fund the “long haul” campaign, includes songs from the 1940s, swing and RnB, and a talk by Lubetkin’s biographer, John Allen.
