Festival set to showcase best creative talents

THE seventh Holloway Arts Festival, which begins this weekend, will kick off a packed 10-day programme of more than 40 events at local venues.
Today (Friday) Turner Prize-winning artist Rachel Whiteread will talk about her work with psychoanalyst Lesley Caldwell at Archway Methodist Hall at 7pm. Tickets available on the door.
Tomorrow (Saturday) winning entries of the Urban Shots photography competition can be viewed from 2pm at Islington Arts Factory.
Also on Saturday is Manor Gardens Centre open day (12-5pm) offering a variety of activities including singing, percussion, smoothie making and cake decorating workshops.
Acclaimed pianist Mark Swartzentruber will perform at Landseer Gardens tomorrow at 6pm followed by an outdoor screening of Afro-Saxons at 10pm – a warm, funny documentary following sytlists preparing for the UK’s biggest afro hair competition.
Art lovers can enjoy Archway Open House, a display of 29 artists’ work at local venues during the Festival, with walking and bus tours of the exhibitions this weekend.
On Sunday a showcase of the best of north London’s film-making talent will be at the Holloway Odeon and there’ll also be an opportunity to see the thrilling Oscar-winning documentary Man on Wire, followed by a discussion with the film’s producer, Simon Chinn.
The Festival runs until 5 July, with events including a free stand-up comedy show for kids with Simon Munnery and Paul Lyalls (June 29), music at Union Chapel from the entrancing Sheila Chandra and Nóirín Ní Riain (June 28), a talk with novelist Marina Lewycka (July 5) and the Festival’s free outdoor day, the Big Day Out in Whittington Park (July 4), featuring local children in a spectacular Alice in Wonderland-themed carnival.
