Masters of mechanics: Awards for 19
MAYOR of Islington Councillor Anna Berent has presented certificates of achievement to 19 young people who completed a motorcycle mechanics workshop course.
Proud family and friends watched last week as each came up to receive awards at the annual town hall ceremony for a programme which has had 64 “graduates” in the three years it has been run by youth club Sparkplug.
Awards went this year to Ben Back, Jack Cronin, Bwarni Frances, Ethan Gopale, Connor Groake, Jake Keen, Stephan Roberts, John Scott, Mark Statham, Hassan Asslouzi, Chelsea Freed, Rauchan Jones, George McMullen, Nicholas Miles, Sam Salter George, Tyron Samuel, Nigel Sengati, Thomas Frances and Louis Rivett.
Labour councillor Paul Convery described Sparkplug as an “outstanding project”. He added: “It takes lads who could otherwise stray into trouble and puts them firmly on the straight and narrow. It’s made a huge difference to the area. And it gives those boys an excellent leg-up to getting into a proper, steady job and settling down.”
