Mayor bike hire backlash
THE Boris bicycle hire backlash is set to continue as his own neighbours prepare for round two of the battle.
Islington Council this week confirmed that residents of Colebrooke Row in Angel, where Mayor of London Mr Johnson lives, have successfully fought off the threat of a motorcycle bay – they are now preparing to fight Mr Johnson’s cycle hire scheme.
The mayor’s plan to put 400 cycle bays across London, including on his own street, has ruffled a few feathers on his doorstep.
The scheme will place 6,000 bikes around the capital, which can be picked up at one stop and left at another.
Transport for London hope to replace five parking bays in Colebrooke Row with a dock holding 35 bikes for hire.
Angel Association chairman Eric Sorensen said: “It’s too close to Duncan Terrace Gardens where a lot of money has been spent making them better and it will just add to the clutter.”
A TfL spokesman said: “These applications are subject to planning consent, and include a period of consultation. Islington Council, as the planning authority, will make the final decision on whether to approve this location.” |
