Boris fails homes test
• BORIS Johnson’s recently-launched London Housing Strategy illustrates all too well the threat the Tories pose to solving Islington’s affordable housing crisis. We know that one of the biggest problems facing Islington people is the dire shortage of social and family housing, and Islington Labour has consistently fought for more affordable housing for the borough.
Yet Boris has scrapped the 50 per cent target for all new housing to be affordable, and raised the threshold for those eligible for “intermediate” housing schemes to an income of £74,000 per year.
And if we need evidence beyond Boris of Tory failings on housing, we need only look at London’s Tory-controlled boroughs, be it Wandsworth, where there are more than 17,000 people on the waiting list for social housing, or Hammersmith and Fulham, where shameful, secret Tory plans to demolish two estates and move people on low incomes out of the borough have just been exposed.
Boris and the Tories came second in Islington in last year’s elections, and what they do in power highlights the threat they pose. In our borough, only Islington Labour will deliver the affordable homes that people need.
