Underground scene Derelict garages are turned into estate youth club in £500,000 transformation

DISUSED communal garages in Holloway have been converted into a youth club, with the help of cash from a housing association.
The Underground Centre on The Ringcross estate was opened by radio DJ Lucy Ambache and Islington Council Lib Dem leader Councillor Terry Stacy.
Islington Youth Forum chairman George Eghator, who has lived on the estate all his life, said: “Two years ago it was a rundown eyesore consisting of sewage pipes, litter and burnt-out vehicles. Today it is a brilliant place for young people to go.”
The club consists of two large multi-space halls, an office, a TV/relaxing room, kitchen, recording studio, homework room, ‘talking’ room, workshop, small rooms for group sessions and large storage areas.
The centre has been funded by the Hyde Group at a cost of £500,000.
DJ Lucy said she remembered her own youth club as being “cool and bringing people together – but without all the amazing activities available here”.
She added: “The youth often get a hard deal. You always read about the problems. But this is different – it’s a place where young people can come and do positive things.”
