Healing community
• READERS might like to know what we do at Room2Heal, one of the Mayor of Islington’s two chosen charities. We are a small, fledgling charity set up to provide a healing community to survivors of gross human rights violations. Typically, our members have experienced various forms of persecution, organised violence and torture in their countries of origin and have sought sanctuary in the UK.
However, the asylum process in this country is often a long, drawn-out and extremely arduous process. Claimants can be left waiting for many years in a kind of limbo world without status. They are often extremely isolated, deeply traumatised and, prohibited from working, rendered incapable of leading any kind of productive life.
Currently, Room2Heal is running a gardening project, situated in Culpeper Community Garden, a story-telling and theatre project, which runs out of the Claremont Project in White Lion Street.
