Sports enthusiast Joanna, a trust has been set up in her memory |
Tragedy gives young star a sporting chance
£2,000 award launched in memory of lawyer who died in fall while hiking in Siberia
ONE of Islington’s most promising young sports stars will benefit from a grant set up in memory of a Highbury woman who died in a hiking accident last year.
The Joanna Brown Trust has teamed up with SportIslington to offer a £2,000 grant to a lucky sports enthusiast.
The trust was set up in memory of keen sportswoman and lawyer Joanna Brown, who died last year at the age of 30 while hiking in Siberia.
Ms Brown, who had a flat in Highbury, was on a three-week holiday to China, where she attended the Olympics, Mongolia and Russia when tragedy struck. While on a 20km trek along the shoreline of Lake Baikal in Siberia last August she slipped and fell down the rock face, suffering fatal head injuries. She died in hospital a short time later.
During her time in Islington, Ms Brown played netball and took part in rowing, yoga and pilates while fitting in time for ski trips and scuba-diving. Joanna Brown trustee Helen Hagan said: “Joanna loved Islington and making the most of the many opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity. We believe the grant will give a local sportsman or woman the chance to reach their full potential, which is a fitting way to honour Joanna.”
The award is open to any Islington resident striving to excel in their chosen sport.
It is the biggest award SportIslington, a council-funded body, has offered since its inception in 2006 and is one of two new grants designed to encourage local talent. The second is a £1,000 grant for sports clubs which have achieved the ClubMark Status or equivalent.
Islington’s Lib Dem leisure chief Councillor Ruth Polling said: “Not only will this grant provide a huge boost to the career of a lucky sportsperson, it will aptly honour the memory of Joanna, who was passionate about living a healthy and active life.” To apply for a grant or for more details, visit www.sportislington.co.uk.
