Bring-and-buy with Goth and granny appeal
GOTHS, grannies, cyberpunks and black-clad bargain hunters flocked to Tufnell Park on Saturday for a spot of alternative shopping.
Organised by Finsbury Park resident Steph Dunk and friend Julia Gosling in response to a lack of good places to buy alternative gear, the weekend’s sale was the duo’s most successful.
Up to 300 people headed to The Dome in Junction Road to rifle through the rubber mohawks, pick out neon hair extensions and flick through rails of black garments at the alternative bring-and-buy sale.
Stallholders sold old clothes, latex, steam punk jewellery, books, music and other eclectica, while a few talented people displayed their hand-made wares.
The sale was supported by London Gothic (The London Goth Meetup Group) and local scene DJs who provided a backdrop of Goth and alternative music to accompany shoppers.
A bar was also open, to help events go with a swing.
Advertising copywriter Ms Dunk, 26, said: “It was the best one we’ve ever done so far. The turnout was nearly double the last one. “Camden is rubbish for shopping now. A lot of prices are for tourists. These days I’ll go on eBay or online shops. “After talking about how Camden shopping had gone downhill with regards to alternative fashion, we saw there was a real need for something like this, where people can grab a bargain, or find really individual items without the Camden High Street tourist
mark-up. “Above all, it’s just a really fun day out – everyone has a laugh as well as finding a bargain or making a bit of cash.”
She added: “We do get random people coming in sometimes off the streets. This time we had a family, which was quite sweet and a couple of grandmas.”
A proportion of the door money is donated to the SOPHIE charity, devoted to stamping out prejudice, intolerance and hatred, set up after teenager Sophie Lancaster was kicked to death in 2007 for looking different.

THIS is always a cool event - friendly, fun, and only 50p to get in! I always enjoy taking a stall here, and meeting so many great people...
