Barge has our backing
• BRITISH Waterways is keen to support all those who seek to use the canals as a location to do business (Canal café misses you, August 7). I would like to make sure readers are aware that British Waterways continues to support the new business, the Sandwich Barge, that Lorraine Fox has set up.
Unfortunately, Ms Fox has been unable to provide us with important information relating to her mooring site, which we requested from her several months ago. However, Ms Fox is able to continue to trade as her business licence permits.
The team here at British Waterways London is more than willing to advise Ms Fox about how she can develop her business and has offered to meet on several occasions. It is important that we treat all of our business customers consistently to ensure fairness for all.
We have invited Ms Fox to take part in an event organised by British Waterways, Yours to Taste, on August 23, which we hope will enable lots of waterway businesses to showcase their culinary offerings to the public. We will be promoting all the waterway businesses involved, including the Sandwich Barge, and hope it’s a great success for everyone taking part.
As guardians of these fantastic historical assets we must do all we can to make sure the funding we have and the income generated from the waterways are maximised to ensure essential repairs and maintenance can be undertaken to preserve them for the future.
We have had a number of expressions of interest regarding the site near City Road Basin in Islington and a tender process is being undertaken to make sure the site is managed properly. Income that British Waterways, a public corporation, makes from any waterway venture is ploughed straight back into the waterways for everyone to enjoy.
