KNIFE DEATH: MURDER COPS GO TO FRANCE
Police take manhunt abroad after stabbing of ‘harmless’ man
AN international manhunt launched after the fatal stabbing of a “harmless” 55-year-old man in Caledonian Road last month has led police to France, the Tribune can reveal.
In July Duncan MacRae, described by neighbours as a loner who took pity on “waifs and strays”, was killed with one strike to the heart with a seven-inch blade outside his flat.
The killing, which is thought to have followed a dispute over a £20 bag of heroin, took place in the daytime in the corridor of the five-flat block Mr MacRae had lived in for more than 20 years.
A European arrest warrant was issued last Wednesday for the murder suspect, a 23-year-old French-Algerian man who had spent time in Mr MacRae’s home before the stabbing.
Last night (Thursday), the officer in charge of the case, Detective Inspector Mark Lawson, said the manhunt had lead him to Paris – where it is thought the suspect has family.
He said the search, which also includes Belgium, was a joint operation between the International Fugitive Unit in France – an arm of the French Gendarme – and his murder investigation team based in Hendon, north London.
DI Lawson said: “[This case] will be brought to justice. I’m pretty confident the suspect will be caught and he will be charged. “To get a European arrest warrant you need to have a full evidential file and a charging decision, so when he’s arrested he will be charged and will be in the judicial system. He won’t be going on bail and he will be charged with murder.”
He was described as 5ft 8ins with an athletic build, short black hair and stubble.
Another man arrested in connection with the killing has been “eliminated” from the investigation and is being treated as a witness. |
