Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 21 August 2009

Signs of cluttered times

• WHAT is it with Islington Council and its love affair with signs telling us not to do things? Walking along Upper Street, all the views of this great street are disfigured by a forest of signs with up to five parking and traffic instruction notices crammed into every hundred feet or less of pavement.
This is a bizarre feature of modern city living and it is worth addressing this problem. It is both environmentally and economically appalling.
The cost of erecting whole new clumps of signs every time politicians want to ban something is a burden the taxpayer should not be indulging. Residents have sent me their own photographs of ridiculous and unnecessary signs, some of these concealing the signs behind them!
Outside my own home, I used to be able to watch the sun set. Now parking signs obscure it.
