Mayor Anna Berent with Richard ‘Mac’ McWatt |
Key skills! Silver surfer logs on with donated computer
ISLINGTON Mayor Anna Berent is definitely not a “twitterer”. But as a silver surfer of 82 she enjoys scanning the internet.
Lib Dem Councillor Berent gave an impromptu lesson on how to view railway timetables to first-time computer user Richard “Mac” McWatt at his home in Canonbury.
Mr McWatt, 82, from Wallace Road, a member of the Manor Gardens Centre Friendship Phone Network, had received free a second-hand computer donated by Maxitech, an ethical IT recycling company.
A retired maintenance engineer at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, in Warren Street, Mr McWatt revealed had never used a computer before. “I never needed to use a computer,” he said. “But now I’ve got one I’m looking forward to looking up information and sending emails to friends and family.”
The Manor Gardens Centre Friendship Phone Network is made up of older people who like to keep in touch. Members receive phone calls from volunteers or contact each other for a chat and some join in with occasional activities.
The new computer project is providing donated computers to older people who have not used them before and will develop a support network in addition to the phone network. Each computer will be installed and supported by specially recruited volunteers. |
