Horse sense: Pub with trough outside
HISTORY was made last week when a 19th-century drinking trough hidden within the depths of City University for almost 200 years was returned to its rightful place.
The two-tonne trough, used by horses and cattle, was winched by crane back into its original setting in Finsbury.
Manufactured by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Trough Association in 1889, the trough now sits in front of the Queen Boadicea pub at the end of Wynyatt Street.
EC1 New Deal for Communities board member David Hyams said: “My grandfather used to drive a horse and cart – his horse may have even drunk from this trough.”
It is thought to have been moved originally to make way for building work but was never returned. Now it will be filled with plants, making it the focal point of a £225,000 scheme to clean up public spaces. |
