‘Pit bull’ and pups seized in flat raid
A DOG suspected of being a pit bull and her nine pups – seized from a Highbury home in an early morning raid – will be destroyed if deemed to be the dangerous breed.
An Islington policeman was bitten by the dog as officers raided the one-bed flat in Avenell Road last week where they found the 10 animals, believed to being bred to fight. Police were alerted by a workman, who had been attacked earlier.
The raid was the latest by Islington police involved in Operation Bark, targeting the growing number of dangerous dogs in the borough.
It up to the courts to decide what will happen to the animals but if they are deemed to be pit bulls they will be destroyed.
Sergeant Dean Akinola, from Hillrise Safer Neighbourhoods police team, who led the operation, said the pups could be sold for £500 each. “These dogs are generally kept to breed pups which in some cases are used for anti-social and crime-related purposes,” he said. In the past 12 months Islington police have investigated more than 50 crimes involving dangerous dogs.
