Prison or flowers?
• I WAS shocked by the letter from a reader complaining about the hanging baskets outside Holloway Prison and by a news article about the London mayor Boris Johnson’s Transport for London’s forcing Islington Council to remove some of their from lamp-posts along Holloway Road (Blooming madness: Flower baskets removed, August 7).
First of all, the hanging baskets outside the prison must realise they were never there for the prisoners’ enjoyment but for the people who live in neighbouring streets, that is, us the public.
I live nearby and the hanging baskets really brighten up what would otherwise be a rather drab, boring, area. With the prison right on our doorstep a little “floral embellishment” is just what we need to distract attention away from the ugliness of Holloway prison.
As for Boris’s pen-pushers at City Hall, what a bunch of killjoys!
I am glad to see the council put two fingers up to them and that as a result a majority of the baskets stayed.
I think the Liberal Democrats who run the council should be congratulated for doing what they can to make the streets of Islington more pleasant for residents.
Hope the council wins a Britain in Bloom award!
