Clegg: boxing can fight crime

Lib Dem leader backs gym community work as he meets dad of stabbed teen

LIB Dem leader Nick Clegg stepped into the boxing ring yesterday – but he wasn’t here to fight.
The party leader visited Times Boxing Club, in Tiber Gardens, off York Way, to talk about youth crime and to meet George Kinsella, father of murdered teenager Ben, who used to train at the gym.
Mr Clegg was given a tour of the gym, before stepping into the ring with sisters Brooke, 17, and Brogan Streatfield, 12, from nearby King Square.
He said: “The Labour government have created more crime by criminalising everything.
“We’ve got to turn things around, do something different. And I think this is a great example of how you can do things differently.
Mr Kinsella, a keen supporter of the boxing club, said: “I hope the council, the government and the mayor realise that in this part of Islington we’re in desperate need of a youth centre – it’s just something the area badly needs.”
Times Boxing Club coach Dave Ryan told Mr Clegg how the club had managed to send 30 young boxers to Tenerife this year.
Mr Ryan said the club was in talks with Islington Council to secure a long lease.
Treasurer Brian Deegan said police officers for the area had begged the club not to move away from the site.
