Dead money... Crypt to be used for debt counselling
A 250-year-old refurbished Islington church crypt is to be used to provide debt counselling later this year as well as space for voluntary organisations.
The crypt, at St Mary’s church in Upper Street, has been transformed at a cost of £860,000 to provide much-needed affordable community meeting facilities in a central location opposite the King’s Head theatre.
Project manager Balazs Csernus said the church hopes to get debt counselling running as soon as possible. “With the recession there is obviously a great need for free financial help,” he added. “It is something we hope to start with partners as soon as we can.”
The crypt has a disabled lift and toilet, staircase, and the new David Sheppard chapel, named after the England cricketer and Bishop who was a curate at St Mary’s in the 1950s.
The church’s
Access for All Project was funded by £280,000 from the church’s own fundraising, with a £200,000 donation by Islington council, £250,000 from the Big Lottery, £70,000 from the Bridge House Trust and £20,000 from
the Cripplegate Foundation.
