Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 4 September 2009

Let’s salute exam stars

• ISLINGTON has achieved record GCSE results this year.
The percentage of students who have gained five or more GCSE passes at grades A*-C has risen to 64.4 per cent.
That’s an eight per cent increase on last year’s results, and a 15.1 per cent increase on the figure two years ago.
This is a great result for Islington. When the Lib Dems took over control of the council from Labour we had very poor GCSE results. It has taken time but we have gradually improved results so we are near the national average.
Holloway School is no longer listed as a challenge school and early indications are that we are off the bottom of the London league table for GCSE results.
Congratulations to all students, staff and governors. Their hard work has paid off and we’ve made a real improvement from last year. I’m delighted we are no longer at the bottom of the London league table.
CLLR PAULA BELFORD
Lib Dem executive member for children and young people
