Party’s over for trendy garden events

Restaurant’s fashionable outdoor gatherings lead to complaints over noise from neighbours

TRENDY garden parties in Archway have been brought to an abrupt halt after complaints about noise.
But the promoters behind the cult Boglewaltz Tropical Garden Parties, which have been held in the lush gardens of pizza restaurant Cafe Mosaic in Junction Road, say they are being punished for the actions of another group.
A more relaxed alternative to the Dalston warehouse parties the organisers are more used to planning, the Archway afternoon events have won acclaim from Time Out and fashionable online music and magazine Shook.
Gareth Jones, who has organised the last two Boglewaltz parties, said they are aimed at young and old, from toddlers to pensioners and the music played is laid-back.
He said Boglewaltz has come under threat after another group organised a loud party at the restaurant a couple of weeks ago and angered residents.
Islington Council’s noise team has warned the restaurant’s owners they face fines of up to £20,000 if any further disturbance takes place. It follows complaints from neighbours that the venue was holding Sunday afternoon raves.
The noise team were called to the pizza restaurant when neighbours reported that the sound coming from the venue’s garden was making their windows rattle. The restaurant was served with a noise abatement notice and ordered to cancel any future parties.
Mr Jones’ Boglewaltz parties have become a casualty of the council’s intervention.
He said: “There was a completely unrelated party in July. We don’t know the people but this is where the problem lies. A lot of people are very disappointed.”
He added: “We just wanted to do an outdoor summer party and stumbled across the venue. Everybody’s tired of going to tried and tested venues in Shoreditch and it was nice to do it somewhere different. They’ve got an absolutely beautiful garden with palm trees.
“We’ve only held two events so far. They were very successful and we didn’t have any complaints. We wanted to work with the venue to make something for the community to enjoy. We had people from all ages, from toddlers to people in their 60s. It ran from 2pm to 10pm. The whole idea was to make it low impact. We had all the licenses and police approval. We’re not interested in banging, loud repetitive beats.”
DJ Cal Jader, who was booked to play at the next party, said: “It’s a big shame because Archway’s got nothing going on. It didn’t go on very late, it was an opportunity for good music and an outdoor party.”
Liberal Democrat ward councillor Ursula Woolley has welcomed the news.
She said: “I’m glad the council’s noise patrol responded to complaints about this noise nuisance, which was so loud it could be heard all around.
“Restaurants like this shouldn’t be given licenses to hold parties if they are going to abuse them and make life a misery for their neighbours.
“People are only asking for a little respect. If the restaurant isn’t willing to respect its neighbours, then the council and the police will have to enforce the rules and make sure they keep the noise down.”
