Attack victim off life-support machine
A TEENAGER has regained consciousness almost two weeks after a baseball bat attack left him on a life-support machine.
Burak Atabey, 18, suffered head injuries in a clash between two groups in the central square at Andover estate, Finsbury Park, at about 1am on Friday, August 21. He was put on a life-support machine but on Monday regained consciousness – 10 days after the attack. He remains in hospital but is now able to get out of bed.
Islington police carried out door-to-door inquiries this week in search of witnesses to the attack in which it is believed a gang of 10 people clashed with a group of four men.
Police believe sticks and bottles were used as weapons. A baseball bat was recovered from the scene. One man was left with a broken arm. Mr Atabey managed to get home after the attack but then fell unconscious.
Detective Inspector Trevor Borley, of Islington CID, said: “The victim is conscious now and the injuries are not as bad as initially thought.” Police want to speak to anyone who saw a white Ford Transit van at the estate or in Newington Barrow Way on the night. Witnesses should call Islington CID on 0207 421 0289 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
