Who knows when it will end? Waste centre still causing stink
THEY’VE put down sweet-smelling disinfectant and deep cleaned the site – but Islington Council’s £60milllion rubbish dump is still causing a “big stink,”.
The only good news for thousands of long-suffering residents living nearby the waste and recycling centre in Hornsey Street, is that summer – the time when the smell is at its worst – is coming to an end.
George Legg, from a firm of architects in Stock Orchard Street, off Caledonian Road, said: “We’ve had good days and bad. When it’s not warm the site doesn’t smell so much. “But despite all the efforts by councillors and officials at the site to improve the situation the pong remains.”
The centre, built as part of the Emirates Stadium development, handles all the household waste collected in the borough, a third of Camden’s waste and 20 per cent of waste from Haringey.
Executive Member of Environment Lib Dem Councillor Greg Foxsmith said: “Management from the centre have met with residents. They have been pulling out all the stops to reduce the smell. They’ve tried disinfectant and deep cleaning. The colder weather will obviously help.” |
