Woman collapses after theft ordeal
THE son of a pensioner who collapsed with heart problems after being robbed at home has spoken of the pain his mother has suffered.
The victim, a woman in her 70s, was tricked into allowing three men posing as water company staff into her home in Birch Close, Archway.
One intruder filled a cup of water from her tap, then threw it against the wall to distract the victim, while two accomplices ran upstairs. The pensioner realised something was wrong and asked them to leave. One man snatched her handbag and all three ran off.
The victim later collapsed with heart problems and has been in hospital since.
Her son, who has asked not to be named, said: “The money taken means nothing. What is upsetting is the impact this has had on mum and our family.
“She collapsed with heart problems the following day and has been ill in hospital since. This meant she missed her three-year-old grandson’s birthday party on Saturday, and both my sister and I have lost time at work to be with mum.
“The council will also face costs in providing the carers she will need when she returns home.”
One suspect is described as being aged between 50 and 60, about 5ft 7in tall with short dark hair. He wore navy-coloured clothing. His accomplices were in their late teens to early 20s, with short dark hair.
Detective Constable Chris Roberts, from Islington Police Burglary Squad, said: “It is important for the victim and her family that these men are brought to justice, but also to prevent anyone else having to go through the same ordeal.”
