Bloom time! Borough is best of the best again
JUDGES have crowned Islington overall winner of the prestigous London in Bloom 2009 awards and praised the borough’s flowers, parks, streets and gardens – for the second year running.
Islington won 11 separate awards and also became the first borough ever to win the new Best London In Bloom Entry award.
Residents, businesses, charities, Islington Council and its partners worked together to spruce up the borough, from putting hanging baskets on main roads to planting flower beds on estates.
This is the second year running Islington has scooped a Gold award in London in Bloom. The borough also won the “best of the best” title.
Cllr Ruth Polling, Islington Council’s executive member for leisure and equalities, said: “We are extremely proud Islington has done so incredibly well, especially with the Overall Winner Award. “This is real recognition of the hard work by residents, community groups, businesses and council officers. It would have been impossible without them, so thank you very much. “There’s a limited amount of green space in Islington, so it’s really important that we make the most of them for residents in the borough who might not have access to gardens of
their own. “Now we’ve got our fingers crossed for Britain in Bloom!” |
