End of the Empire
HISTORIC variety theatre Hackney Empire is to close in January amid severe financial difficulties.
Widespread redundancies are expected when the 108-year-old music hall goes dark in the new year, with a skeleton staff kept on for youth work projects.
Artistic director Claire Middleton, who replaced Simon Thomsett in the post last month, said the organisation needed at least nine months to “take stock of the way [it] operates”.
The Victorian venue, which has played host to Charlie Chaplin, WC Field and Stan Laurel, reopened in 2004 after a three year £17million renovation project. |
