Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 2 October 2009

Smokers’ squalor

• LAST Friday I went to Whittington Hospital. The sunny forecourt, with its benches and No Smoking signs, was crowded with smokers.
I don’t have a problem with this. People often need to smoke going to and from hospital. But the cigarette butts littered around the forecourt benches was disgusting – worse than Leicester Square on a Saturday night.
I complained to Patient Services, who told me they had tried to get it cleaned up but weren’t having any luck. Apparently, the outside of the hospital is in the care of Jarvis. I would have thought it was no big deal for cleaning staff employed by Whittington to have swept up the mess.
Whittington has a wonderful forecourt/entrance lobby, totally spoilt by the squalor of these butts. There must have been more than 500. What a bad first impression this gives of a hospital. If smoking is going to be allowed, please take down the No Smoking signs.
