TV plea over mum-to-be rape sparks calls
POLICE have received more than 50 calls from the public after the BBC’s Crimewatch programme appealed for information about the rape of a heavily pregnant woman in Finsbury Park last year.
Until now, police have not publicised the attack – at the request of the victims – but officers turned to the media this week after other inquiries failed.
Tuesday’s television programme featured a reconstruction of the attack, with commentary from the victims.
Speaking of the rape, the victim’s boyfriend told the programme: “I pleaded. I was shouting: ‘She’s pregnant, she’s pregnant, leave off her. Tell me what you want’.”
His girlfriend, seven months pregnant at the time, added: “I just wanted to protect my baby. I was absolutely terrified and being so late in the pregnancy I didn’t want to get into a fight where they might hurt me or the baby. He said it was my lucky day.”
The woman later gave birth to a healthy child, but the experience continues to haunt the couple. The female victim said: “Everything you believe to be safe is no longer safe. You can’t walk into the bedroom and feel relaxed because you remember someone was in there who wasn’t supposed to be in there.”
A £20,000 reward has been offered in return for information leading to the attackers.
Detectives have released CCTV images of three men they wish to speak to in connection with the attack at about 10.30pm on May 14 last year.
Three men wearing scarves and balaclavas forced their way into the home of a 39-year-old man and his 33-year-old girlfriend. The man was hit with the butt of a gun while his girlfriend was taken to an upstairs bedroom by one of the suspects.
The thieves stole keys to the couple’s grey Audi TT as well as a mobile phone, iPod, cash, debit cards and a laptop. The car was found two days later in Portland Road, Tottenham.
The suspects, all aged between 18 and the early 20s, wore black, light grey and burgundy tracksuit bottoms. Two men were caught on CCTV at 10.22pm before the attack, outside a mini-market at the corner of Seven Sisters Road and Durham Road, Holloway. A third man is pictured on camera at 10.02pm at the corner of Seven Sisters Road and Fonthill Road.
