Even better park on way
• A LETTER has raised concerns about the current state of Whittington Park while work is taking place (Pond soaks up our cash, October 2). These are clearly valid concerns and I would like to explain what’s going on.
We were part-way through a project to build a pond when we managed to secure significantly more funding. In practice, this meant that the existing pond project and the new football changing rooms project would have to be carried out at the same time to combine the necessary landscape works and minimise disruption.
Unfortunately, this resulted in a delay while we put the new work out to tender. The good news is that we’re now in a position to start work and residents will see a far better scheme when it’s all finished next spring.
The fenced-in site next to the back of the school will be returned to green space. The new scheme will include a real emphasis on education with an ecology teaching area outside, and an environmentally-friendly classroom in the changing room building.
I know this is a treasured local park, which has been awarded a Green Flag for the last two years following a raft of improvements, including the outdoor gym, the sparrow meadow and the wild flowers, so I would like to thank residents for bearing with us during these works.
