Global goal - Pupils launch FIFA World Cup campaign
CHILDREN from Hungerford Primary School took to the stage in front of football stars, a queen and Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
Pupils Dylan Skinner and Ore Olukoga spoke on the importance of “education for all” at the launch of the 2010 FIFA World Cup 1GOAL campaign, which aims to provide school places for the 75 million children out of school around the world.
BBC anchor Gary Lineker hosted the event, while England footballers Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and David James were there to support. Campaign co-founder Queen Rania of Jordan was also present at the event which was linked by satellite to world leaders including Prime Minister Zapatero of Spain and South Africa’s President Zuma.
Dylan Skinner, eight, told the gathering: “I think every child should get a great education and learn to read and write. Because if you don’t you won’t get a good life or a good job. Our school has a partner school in South Africa. The children there need the same chances that we do.”
Ore Olukoga, 11, said: “Just think for a minute what it would be like if you couldn’t go to school and how you would feel. We want everyone to sign up to the 1GOAL campaign and give every child a chance to go to school.”
Prime Minister Brown signed up to the campaign, saying before the event: “The World Cup focuses global attention unlike any other tournament, and next year’s – the first-ever held on African soil – provides an unprecedented opportunity to use that focus to leave a lasting legacy. It’s an outrage that 35 million African children miss out on a basic primary education, tackling that would be an incredible achievement.
“That is why I am delighted that global leaders, some of the world’s best footballers and ordinary people from every continent have come together to back 1GOAL. I am today urging all world leaders to sign up to this campaign and promise to make next year an historic turning point.” |
