Islington Tribune - LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published: 16 October 2009

Death on danger road

• TRAGICALLY, there have been two significant car accidents in Junction Road, Archway, involving pedestrians. The first involved one of the Junction Road shopkeepers, Huseyin Oksuz, of BS Food and Wine, which sadly was fatal.
The second involved a child, and thankfully was not.
The community of Archway is now petitioning the council to urgently improve road safety along Junction Road before we have any further accidents.
Junction Road is dangerous at either end, and along its entire length.
Both ends have unfiltered crossings across oncoming traffic. And throughout its length there is poor visibility due to parked vehicles, and inadequate traffic calming which allows irresponsible motorists to speed.
I have been lobbying the council for more than 10 years to improve the safety of Junction Road, and for the most part officers have listened sympathetically and taken appropriate action.
Sadly, the road continues to be a significant danger for all road users – pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists – not least the children of the three primary schools close to Junction Road.
The council has ruled out the prospect of Junction Road becoming part of the wider 20mph scheme, without good reason.
The petition urges the council to think again and to find ways to improve the safety of Junction Road for everyone.
The petition can be signed at shops along Junction Road, including BS Food and Wine and Absolute Print.
I urge everyone who lives or works in the area to sign the petition. When we have more than 1,000 signatures we will present it to the council.
Chris Roche
Archway resident and campaigner
