‘Girl pushed into canal’
A GOOD samaritan described to jurors this week how he ran to the aid of a schoolgirl as a man tried to drown her in the Regent’s Canal in Islington.
Rescuer Andrew Hall told the Old Bailey he was alerted to the drama near Wenlock Basin when he heard screams coming from under a bridge.
As he moved nearer to investigate on the evening of November 12 last year, he saw the pregnant teenager being kicked and punched. Seconds later her assailant pushed the 15-year-old into the murky waters and ran off after threatening Mr Hall with an unidentified weapon. “He had something in his hand but I couldn’t see what it was,” Mr Hall said. “She was in the water. I leant over and grabbed her arms and pulled her out. She was very upset.”
The schoolgirl had a cut to the back of the head and had dropped money on the ground. “She was concerned to get away from there, believing they were still trying to kill her,” Mr Hall said.
On trial is former St Aloysius College pupil Kingsley Ogundele, 19, who lived in Islington for many years before moving to Romford.
He denies conspiracy to murder the girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons.
The trial continues. |
